Quick answer

Measure the furniture and the route. Width alone is not enough: depth, height, stair turns, mirrors and removable drawers all affect the carry.

Record three dimensions

Measure width, depth and height at the widest points, including trim, feet and handles. Record whether legs, mirrors or drawers come off.

Find the tightest point

Check the bedroom door, hallway turn, stair landing, elevator and exterior door. Measure the clear opening after accounting for handles and stops.

Control the piece before changing anchors

Empty drawers and remove loose shelves. For top-heavy furniture, keep the piece stable while an adult handles any anti-tip restraint. CPSC advises anchoring clothing-storage furniture to reduce tip-over risk.

Share a useful inventory

Send the dimensions, material, floor level and two route photos: the item in the room and the tightest turn. That is more useful than a single close-up.
